What they are actually doing, in many cases, is setting the stage for a considerably more expensive and dangerous outcome.

Antibiotic misuse does not only harm the individual patient. Each unnecessary amoxicillin course contributes to the broader problem of antimicrobial resistance — a crisis that the World Health Organization has identified as one of the most significant threats to global public health.

For the individual patient, resistance has a direct financial consequence. When a patient develops a resistant infection because prior antibiotic use — their own or within their household — has selected for resistant organisms, the treatment options narrow. The argument for diagnostic confirmation before prescribing amoxicillin is not simply clinical. It is economic. A rapid strep test, a urinalysis with culture, a chest X-ray to confirm pneumonia, or a basic blood panel to assess infection markers — these are modest expenditures relative to the costs they prevent.

Patients who receive a confirmed diagnosis before starting amoxicillin therapy are more likely to complete an effective course, less likely to return for repeat visits, and less likely to develop the complications that result from treating the wrong pathogen or no pathogen at all. The prescription, when it is warranted, works as intended. The infection resolves. The patient does not return.

That outcome — straightforward, complete, and final — is the most cost-effective scenario available. It requires only one thing the shortcut approach deliberately avoids: confirmation before treatment.
